PLACEBO PART COMPANY WITH DRUMMER STEVE HEWITT

Placebo have parted company with drummer of 11 years, Steve Hewitt, due to personal and musical differences.

Brian Molko commented "Being in a band is very much like being in a marriage, and in couples - in this case a triple - people can grow apart over the years. To say that you don't love your partner anymore is inaccurate, considering all that you've been through and achieved together. There simply comes a point when you realize that you want different things from your relationship and that you can no longer live under the same roof, so to speak."

The split is amicable and a sad time for both parties. Steve Hewitt replaced Robert Schultzberg behind the drum kit in 1996 whilst the band were promoting Placebo’s eponymous debut album and went on to record the following 4 studio albums ‘Without You I’m Nothing’, ‘Black Market Music’, ‘Sleeping With Ghosts’ and most recently ‘Meds’.

Placebo have just returned from the USA where they were part of the high profile ‘Projekt Revolution Tour’ alongside Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance. The band are now taking a well earned break.

Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal will begin work on Placebo’s 6th studio album next Spring and are in no rush to find an immediate replacement for Steve.

FFLAM FESTIVAL POSTPONED

A statement just released from the promoter of FFLAM Festival in Wales, where Placebo were due to headline on 14th July, reads as follows:

"Due to consistently bad weather conditions over the last few weeks, we regret that the Fflam Festival has been postponed. This has been a hard, but well considered decision and we believe it is the best one for all concerned.

The adverse weather has caused a delay in putting the infrastructure in place and it is also a big concern that the unfavourable climate will hugely dampen the experience we want to give all our festival goers. Postponing the festival will mean that we can give everyone the Fflam festival experience they deserve, bands, organisers and festivalgoers alike.

We expect the new date to be at the end of the summer and are doing all we can do get everything reorganised as quickly and efficiently as possible so that we can confirm the date within the week.

Tickets already purchased will be honoured for the rescheduled dates.
Alternatively, ticket refunds (excluding booking fee) will shortly be available from point of purchase for anyone who wishes to take up this option. We would, however, like to reassure everyone that the festival WILL take place and encourage them to await further information on the new date before making their decision"

At homo in Vilnius

A message from Stefan, after the bands performance at the Upa Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania last week :

'Every year the EU sends a bus around Europe to promote anti-discrimination rallies. This year in May the mayor of Vilnius banned it from entering the capital city of Lithuania. The reasons for this, he said was that it would cause riots and unrest. He has in the past supported actions that have put a stop to pro tolerance of minorities and sexual orientation in the workspace.

As we were touring Russia and the former eastern block we realized from the news and from people we met that this is not uncommon in these areas. We felt that we had to do something. We had a voice and since homosexuality is not illegal, nothing that we were to do would seriously jeopardize the tour.

So for the show in Vilnius, I took to writing ‘HOMO’ on my chest and in front of thousands me and Brian shared a long kiss. It was our act of public display of homosexuality, which isn’t our first time (!) and not something that is very shocking to most of us. But it seems that a lot of work is still needed for this discrimination to disappear. In our way, we did our bit that night.'

APOLOGY TO PORTUGESE FANS

Placebo would like to apologise unreservedly to all the fans who attended the Creamfields festival in Lisbon on Saturday night (19th May). The set was cut short due to Brian losing his voice as an extreme reaction to the cold temperatures. He was literally unable to keep singing. The band left the stage for the encore but decided it was impossible to continue. "We sincerely apologise to all our fans at Creamfields. We understand that it must have seemed confusing as to what was going on and we are sorry we had to cut our set short. Nothing frustrates us more than having on stage problems. In this instance, the problems were simply Brian's voice. We hate to let our fans down but there was just nothing we could do. It's certainly not the way we'd hoped to kick off our European tour!!"

Check out the album 'A Call and Response', and the soon to be released double A-side 'Idiot Check/You Got The Love' on Manchester's own Melodic label. 7th March support - The Officers - hail from Leeds and are starting to attract early praise from the likes of Eddy Temple Morris, The Music and The Infadels. Some of you may remember or even recognise the drummer, it is ex-Colour of Fire drummer Mat Lunn, check it out! They are yet to release any singles, but are recording a few tracks in March with producer Jagz Kooner (Primal Scream/ Radio 4).

Second night at The Coronet

With the London Coronet show selling out within 5 minutes last Friday, the band were concerned that there were so many disappointed fans. So, in an effort to give more people the chance to see them play in this more intimate setting, they’ve re-arranged some of their rehearsals to accommodate a second show!!

This will now take place on Tuesday 6th March at The Coronet, Elephant & Castle, London.

Additionally, there are some rather unscrupulous people out there, clearly not Placebo fans, who were putting tickets from the original show straight onto eBay for an extortionate amount of money. The band hope that the second show will at least curb these prices and demand. These two shows will be the last Placebo shows in the UK this year. Tickets will be limited to two per person, and will go on sale from 9am Tuesday 27th February 2007.

Tickets only available from the following outlets:

Virgin Records USA is re-releasing Meds, on January 23, 2007. The album was originally released in the U.S. earlier in 2006 through Astralwerks.

Over the last year Placebo have once again made significant in-roads into the USA.. The current crop of successful US Alternativve Rock bands such as Panic! at the Disco, AFI, Aiden (Meds is lead singer Will Francis' album of 2006) and My Chemical Romance, have all recently commented in some way on how Placebo have been an influence on their music. My Chemical Romance recently commented on Placebo winning the Kerrang! Classic Songwriters Award in the UK: 'Many congratulations to Placebo from all of us in My Chemical Romance. We love you dearly and you guys are undoubtedly the most deserving of this particular award.'

Let's Save a Planet

Unless you live in a monastic retreat or are allergic to the news, you’ll know that global warming is coming and it’s not good. What is good is that you can now do something about it. Welcome to Global Cool.

Global Cool is BIG. Global Cool is a charitable foundation here to stir anyone who cares about the planet to do their bit to save the planet they care about. And last time we counted, that was around six and a half billion people or so. More powerful than governments, more vocal than corporations, we are our own best shot at it: The People versus Global Warming.

Global Cool is COOL. Everyone knows that they ought to save the planet; Global Cool will help people want to. Global Cool includes a growing gang of the biggest names in entertainment (names – let’s drop a few: The Scissor Sisters, Orlando Bloom, The Killers, Flea, Kate Bosworth, Sienna Miller, Leonardo di Caprio) and with their shows, their programmes, their Cooltube uploads and playful SMS reminders they will sing to you, tell you stories and tease you until you care.

Global Cool is STRONG. By getting as many people as possible to do their bit to save a planet, Global Cool will actually slow down global warming. This isn’t cheap talk: Global Cool is not only backed by the biggest names in popular entertainment, it’s backed by the smartest names in environmental science who know that a billion people x a modest reduction of one tonne of CO2 per person = a billion less tonnes of CO2 = a significant slowdown in global warming.

If that all sounds good – and hopefully it does – just remember that absolutely nothing happens if everything is left to everyone else. So you know what to do. Sign up, save a planet and enjoy.'

URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT - LILLE SHOW POSTPONED!

Placebo have had to postpone the first show of their arena tour in Lille this Friday night (29th September).

Brian Molko came down with severe tonsillitis on Sunday night. He saw a specialist on Tuesday and was immediately admitted to hospital where he spent Tuesday and Wednesday night on an intravenous drip. Brian was released from hospital this morning (Thursday) and is under doctors orders to rest for 48 hours. His doctor has ruled out a show on Friday night.

Brian is now fighting to be fit for Saturday’s show in Lille. At present, we very much hope this show will go ahead and, subject to doctors ok, this is our intention. Please check here for updates regarding any further necessary cancellations.

Placebo very much regret having to cancel a show and are aware how disappointing this is for the fans who’ve bought tickets and have been waiting a long time to see the band. Brian is devastated at the timing of this illness and apologises to all the fans. It’s particularly disappointing as this was the very first show of the band’s autumn European arena tour.

We will however be re-scheduling the show and all tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled date. Please check here for details. For those that wish to have their tickets refunded, please contact their point of purchase.

Thanks to all for your understanding.

10th ANNIVERSARY REISSUE OF DEBUT ALBUM - OUT NOW

On 25th September, Placebo will release a 10th anniversary re-mastered version of their classic eponymous debut.

‘Placebo’ was originally released in July 1996 and went on to become one of THE seminal rock albums of the 1990s. The first single from the album, ‘Teenage Angst’, charted respectably at number 30. It was the second single from the album - ‘Nancy Boy’ - which would set the Top 5 of the UK chart ablaze. ‘Nancy Boy’ was a rallying call-to-arms for outrageous and androgynous boys and girls; an antidote and two-fingered gesture to the laddism of Britpop, resulting in a blistering TOTP performance. ‘Placebo’ went on to go Platinum (300,000 sales) in the UK and sell over 750,000 worldwide, cementing the band’s place as one the truly great guitar-pop bands of the 1990s, which continues to this day - recent album ‘Meds’ has sold one million-to-date, taking the band’s total sales to eight million.

The album re-issue will feature the original album re-mastered, plus exclusive, previously unavailable demo ‘Paycheck’, and fan club only demo ‘Flesh Mechanic’. Also included are b-sides ‘Drowning By Numbers’, which was the b-side to Placebo long since deleted second single ‘Come Home’ - released on Deceptive Records; and ‘Slackerbitch’, which appeared on ‘Nancy Boy’. The second disc will be a DVD made up of all the promo videos from the album and previously unavailable live and TV performances, including a Glastonbury 1998 performance of ‘Lady of The Flowers’, and a hilarious Big Breakfast roadshow performance of ‘Teenage Angst’.
See below for full track listing.

This summer Placebo has headlined 11 European festivals and triumphantly return to the UK to make their fourth appearance at Reading Festival - also their 10th anniversary appearance – where they’ll be the penultimate band on the main stage on Sunday 27th August (as well as playing Leeds Festival on 26th), further proving their status as one of the UK’s most important and enduring bands.
